The Centre is expected to place the draft National Power Policy before the Union Cabinet in August, marking a significant step toward strengthening India’s sector. The proposed policy aims to modernize electricity infrastructure, improve grid reliability, accelerate renewable energy integration, and ensure affordable, round-the-clock power supply across the country.
Power Policy to Focus on Grid Modernization and Energy Security
The upcoming policy is expected to outline a long-term roadmap for India’s electricity sector, addressing rising demand while supporting the country’s clean energy transition. Key areas of focus include expanding transmission infrastructure, improving distribution efficiency, promoting energy storage systems, and encouraging greater adoption of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro.
The draft is also likely to emphasize financial sustainability for power distribution companies (discoms), digitalization of the sector, and enhanced use of smart grids and advanced technologies to improve operational efficiency. These measures are intended to reduce transmission losses, strengthen energy security, and create a more resilient system.
With electricity demand reaching record highs during peak summer months, the proposed policy seeks to ensure that India’s infrastructure can meet future consumption while supporting the nation’s target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030. If approved by the Cabinet, the policy is expected to provide strategic direction for investments, regulatory reforms, and long-term growth of the Indian power sector.
