CBG Production Expansion to Help Curb Energy Imports
The government is targeting at least a 10-fold increase in Compressed Biogas (CBG) production over the next 5–10 years as India looks to reduce its dependence on imported fuels and strengthen domestic security. The focus is on rapidly expanding clean fuel production by building a stronger and more reliable CBG ecosystem across the country.
The planned expansion will support greater utilisation of agricultural waste, cattle dung, municipal waste and other organic feedstocks for producing clean fuel. By converting waste into energy, India can not only increase domestic fuel availability but also create additional value from resources that are otherwise underutilised.
The government is also working to address key challenges related to feedstock availability, pricing, transportation, pipeline connectivity and project financing. With more CBG projects coming up, the sector is expected to attract greater investment and create new opportunities across the clean-energy and rural economy.
The 10-fold growth target reflects India’s broader push towards cleaner fuels, lower import dependence and greater energy self-reliance, while supporting the country’s long-term transition towards a more sustainable system.
