India’s private space sector reached a landmark moment as Skyroot Aerospace successfully launched Vikram-1, the country’s first privately developed orbital rocket. Lifting off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, the mission successfully placed six payloads into Low Earth Orbit (LEO), making Skyroot the first Indian private company to achieve an orbital launch.

The successful mission demonstrates India’s growing capabilities in commercial space technology and reinforces the country’s ambition to become a major player in the global satellite launch market.

Mission Aagaman Opens a New Era for India’s Space Industry

Named Mission Aagaman, the maiden flight carried six payloads from Indian and international customers, including technology demonstrations and small satellites. The rocket successfully reached its planned orbit, validating its propulsion, navigation, and satellite deployment systems.

Developed by Hyderabad-based Skyroot Aerospace, Vikram-1 is a 22-meter-tall, four-stage launch vehicle capable of carrying up to 350 kg to Low Earth Orbit. It incorporates advanced technologies such as 3D-printed engines, carbon-fiber composite structures, and a restartable liquid upper stage, enabling cost-effective and reliable satellite launches.

The achievement comes six years after India opened its space sector to private participation, paving the way for startups to develop independent launch vehicles. With Vikram-1’s success, India joins a select group of nations where a private company has successfully launched an orbital rocket, marking a significant milestone in the country’s commercial space journey.

As global demand for small satellite launches continues to rise, Skyroot Aerospace is expected to play a key role in expanding India’s presence in the international space economy.
