India is experiencing a sharp rise in electricity demand as intense heatwave conditions continue across several regions. With temperatures soaring, the use of cooling appliances like air conditioners, coolers, and fans has significantly increased, pushing power consumption to record highs.

Coal Output Increased to Meet Rising Power Demand

To handle this surge, India has ramped up coal and natural gas production. The primary source of electricity generation in the country, the government is ensuring maximum supply to thermal power plants to avoid any power shortages. Improved logistics and stock management have helped maintain stable electricity supply during peak demand periods.

In addition, gas-based power plants are being used more actively to manage fluctuations in demand. These plants provide flexibility and quick response during peak hours, supporting the overall power grid.

Despite the growing contribution of renewable energy sources like solar and wind, their intermittent nature makes gas essential for maintaining grid stability. Experts believe that while increasing coal output is necessary in the short term, India must continue investing in renewable energy and storage technologies for a sustainable future.

The current situation highlights the need for a balanced approach between energy security and environmental sustainability, especially as climate change continues to intensify extreme weather conditions.
