Andhra Pradesh has taken a significant step towards becoming a major exporter of green energy, with India’s first large-scale green ammonia export complex in Kakinada entering a crucial phase.

The project is set to install its first major equipment on Saturday, marking an important milestone. A senior state minister described the development as a major move towards positioning Andhra Pradesh as the “Saudi Arabia of green energy.”

The $10 billion project, being developed by AM Green, is aimed at exporting green ammonia to international markets, beginning with Germany, Japan and Singapore. It represents the first instance of renewable energy–based molecules produced in India being exported for global consumption. Andhra Pradesh’s minister for information technology and human resources development, Nara Lokesh, highlighted the achievement in a social media post, noting the state’s growing role in global green energy supply chains.

The Kakinada complex is planned to have a capacity of 1.5 million tonnes per annum. Its first phase is expected to be commissioned by March 2027, while the final phase is scheduled for completion by 2030. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Konidala Pawan Kalyan are expected to attend the event, underscoring the project’s strategic importance for the state and the country’s clean energy export goals.

Integrated clean energy ecosystem

The project integrates renewable power generation, energy storage, hydrogen production and port-based export infrastructure within Andhra Pradesh. According to a government statement, the system will include 7.5 gigawatts of solar and wind capacity, 1,950 megawatts of electrolyser capacity, and 2 gigawatts of round-the-clock renewable power supported by pumped hydro storage. This includes a pumped storage project at Pinnapuram in the state.

The facility is being developed through the brownfield conversion of an existing ammonia-urea plant, which has been described as a significant industrial revival initiative.

Jobs, exports and global demand

Around 8,000 jobs are expected to be created during the construction phase, with additional employment opportunities during operations and across allied sectors such as renewable energy, logistics, storage and port services.

AM Green has already entered into long-term supply agreements with international buyers, including Germany-based Uniper, and is in talks with companies in Japan and Singapore. Officials said the project would make Kakinada the first location in India to export green energy products to Europe and advanced Asian markets.

The green ammonia produced at the complex will be used for applications such as shipping fuel, power generation and as a feedstock for green hydrogen, contributing to decarbonisation efforts in overseas markets.
