India’s solar sector has spent the past decade chasing scale. Today, it has achieved it.
From just 2.8 GW of installed solar capacity in 2014, India has expanded to 157 GW, while adding a record 44.6 GW in FY26, the highest annual capacity addition in its history. The country is now on course to become the world’s second-largest solar market in terms of annual installations. Few major economies have expanded renewable energy at this pace.
The numbers tell a success story. But they also signal something equally important: India’s solar industry is entering a new phase of maturity.
Every rapidly growing sector eventually reaches an inflection point where the challenge shifts from building capacity to building resilience. For India’s solar ecosystem, that moment has arrived.
The first phase was about accelerating installations. The next phase is about making growth geographically balanced, economically sustainable and globally competitive.
One of the clearest indicators of this transition is manufacturing.
Over the past few years, government initiatives such as the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, Basic Customs Duty (BCD) and the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) have fundamentally changed India’s solar manufacturing landscape. What was once a heavily import-dependent sector now has one of the world’s fastest-growing domestic manufacturing bases.
Industry estimates suggest module manufacturing capacity has expanded to nearly 210 GW, several times the country’s annual domestic demand of 40-45 GW. At first glance, this may appear to be excess capacity. In reality, it reflects something more encouraging: manufacturers are investing ahead of demand because they see India emerging as a long-term global manufacturing hub.
This is precisely how industrial transformations unfold. China, Vietnam and several East Asian economies also built manufacturing capacity ahead of domestic consumption before becoming export powerhouses. India now has an opportunity to follow a similar trajectory.
The next challenge is therefore not reducing manufacturing but expanding markets.
Domestic demand will continue to rise as India moves towards its ambitious renewable energy targets, while new growth drivers such as rooftop solar, commercial and industrial installations, agricultural solarisation, battery storage and green hydrogen will steadily widen the market.
At the same time, exports must become the sector’s second growth engine. As global demand for diversified and resilient supply chains grows, Indian manufacturers have an opportunity to establish themselves as reliable alternatives in international markets. Achieving that will require continued improvements in efficiency, technology, quality and scale, but the foundation is already being laid.
Another opportunity lies in geography.
Today, nearly 85% of India’s installed solar capacity is concentrated in seven states, with Rajasthan and Gujarat leading deployment. Rather than viewing this as a structural weakness, policymakers can treat it as the next frontier for growth. States with relatively lower solar penetration represent untapped investment opportunities. Faster land approvals, stronger transmission networks, easier grid connectivity and more predictable state policies can unlock a new wave of capacity addition across eastern, southern and central India.
As solar deployment spreads geographically, it will strengthen grid resilience, improve energy access and distribute economic benefits more evenly.
The sector is also moving beyond simply installing panels. Future growth will increasingly be driven by integrated energy ecosystems that combine solar generation with storage, smart grids, transmission infrastructure and flexible power markets. This evolution will make renewable energy more reliable while supporting India’s broader energy transition.
India’s solar journey is no longer just about adding gigawatts. It is about creating an ecosystem capable of competing globally while supporting domestic energy security and industrial growth.
The country has already demonstrated that it can build one of the world’s largest renewable energy markets in record time. The next decade offers an even bigger opportunity: to become not only a leader in solar deployment but also a global centre for manufacturing, innovation and clean energy exports.
If the first chapter of India’s solar story was about ambition, the next one will be about leadership. And the signs suggest that transition has already begun.
