India’s electricity consumption increased by 11.62% year-on-year to 166.46 billion units (BU) in June 2026, driven by prolonged heatwave conditions and a delayed monsoon across several regions. The sharp rise reflects higher demand for cooling appliances such as air conditioners, fans, and refrigeration systems in both residential and commercial sectors.

The surge in power demand pushed utilities to maintain higher generation levels, with thermal power plants continuing to play a key role while renewable energy sources helped meet peak demand. The increase also highlights the growing pressure on India’s infrastructure during extreme weather events, reinforcing the need for continued investments in grid modernization, energy storage, and renewable energy capacity.

Why It Matters

As climate change intensifies heatwaves and electricity demand continues to grow, ensuring a resilient and diversified power system will be critical for India’s energy security and its transition toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
