Adani Power announced on Thursday that it has secured a 1,600 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power project from MP Power Management Company Ltd (MPPMCL). The company plans to invest about ₹21,000 crore in setting up the plant along with supporting infrastructure.
As per the company’s statement, Adani Power received a Letter of Award (LoA) from MPPMCL, which includes an additional 800 MW capacity under the ‘Greenshoe Option’. With this, the total awarded capacity stands at 1,600 MW under the recently concluded bidding process.
Earlier, Adani Power had won 800 MW in the same tender, and this fresh allocation doubles the order size. This becomes the company’s fifth major order in the past year, taking its total awarded capacity in 12 months to 7,200 MW.
The newly added 800 MW will also be supplied at the same tariff of ₹5.838/kWh as the earlier capacity. Power will be delivered from a 1,600 MW (2×800 MW) ultra-supercritical thermal unit that Adani Power will design, build, finance, own, and operate (DBFOO) in Anuppur district of Madhya Pradesh. Both units are scheduled for commissioning within 60 months of the appointed date.
This marks the first instance of a ‘Greenshoe Option’ being used in a thermal power tender in India. The inclusion of this mechanism in coal-based power procurement is expected to help Madhya Pradesh meet its growing electricity needs driven by urbanisation and industrial expansion, thereby strengthening the state’s energy security.
Expressing his views, Adani Power CEO S. B. Khyalia said, “We are delighted that Adani Power has not only won the initial 800 MW allocation in Madhya Pradesh but has also been entrusted with another 800 MW under the greenshoe option.”
The project will source coal through linkage under the Government of India’s SHAKTI Policy. It is expected to create 9,000–10,000 jobs during construction and around 2,000 employment opportunities once it becomes operational.Adani Power will soon execute a Power Supply Agreement (PSA) with the state distribution company.
Currently, the company operates 18.15 GW across 12 thermal power plants and aims to scale up its overall generation capacity to 41.87 GW by 2031–32. Its portfolio includes 18,110 MW of thermal capacity spread across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Tamil Nadu, along with a 40 MW solar plant in Gujarat.
