The Maharashtra government has announced a collaboration with Finland to modernise Mumbai’s historic Sassoon Dock, aiming to transform the 19th-century fishing harbour into a world-class, sustainable facility. This initiative seeks to address operational challenges, environmental concerns, and hygiene issues that have arisen due to the dock’s operations exceeding its original capacity.
Fisheries and Port Development Minister Nitesh Rane met with Finnish officials and industry representatives at the dock to discuss strategic plans for the upgrade. The proposed modernisation will introduce modular infrastructure designed to enhance efficiency, improve safety, and reduce environmental impact. The discussions also focused on implementing advanced fishing methods, digital solutions, and eco-friendly innovations to boost productivity and increase fishermen’s earnings.
Sassoon Dock, one of Mumbai’s oldest and busiest fishing harbours, plays a crucial role in the city’s seafood supply chain. The modernisation project is expected to enhance the livelihood of local fishermen and contribute to the sustainable development of Mumbai’s coastal infrastructure.
