India Set to Achieve Record 20GW Distributed Renewable Capacity This Fiscal
Rooftop solar, commercial installations, and policy support are driving India’s fastest-ever expansion in distributed renewable energy.
India is on track to add a record 20GW of distributed renewable energy (DRE) capacity during the current financial year, marking a significant milestone in the country’s clean energy transition. The growth is being fueled by rising rooftop solar adoption, increasing investments from businesses, and supportive government initiatives aimed at expanding decentralized power generation.
Distributed renewable energy systems including rooftop solar installations, solar pumps, mini-grids, and captive renewable projects are becoming an increasingly important part of India’s energy landscape. They help reduce dependence on conventional power sources, improve energy access, and lower electricity costs for households, industries, and commercial establishments.
Government programs such as the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, along with state-level incentives and net-metering policies, have accelerated rooftop solar adoption across residential and commercial sectors. Falling solar equipment prices and improved financing options are also encouraging consumers and businesses to invest in clean energy solutions.
