New Delhi: The Public Works Department (PWD) has issued a tender for a feasibility study to build a 5.5-km elevated corridor along Sonia Vihar Pusta Road in northeast Delhi. The project, estimated to cost 500 crore, is aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between Delhi and the Uttar Pradesh border near Tronica City.
The proposed flyover will run from Nanaksar Gurudwara T-Point to the Delhi-UP border. Officials said the road currently experiences heavy traffic throughout the day, with congestion reported during both peak and non-peak hours. The elevated corridor is expected to reduce these delays and provide smoother transit for commuters and residents.
A consultant will be appointed to carry out a detailed feasibility study, which will include a right-of-way assessment over a six-kilometre stretch. The study will also assess the impact on existing infrastructure, such as trees lining both sides of the road and an underground Delhi Jal Board (DJB) pipeline. The DJB’s Sonia Vihar treatment plant is located near the proposed alignment.
According to PWD officials, widening the existing Pusta Road on the city side is not an option due to space limitations. Therefore, the elevated structure will be built using the space available along the central verge. Pillars for the flyover will be constructed on both sides of the road, allowing ground-level traffic to continue without interruption.
PWD Minister Parvesh Verma, who visited the site in April, announced the project after receiving a request from local MLA Kapil Mishra. The proposal was later approved following a discussion with Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
“The people of Sonia Vihar have faced serious traffic issues for a long time. Given the number of trees in the area, building an elevated flyover is the most viable option,” said Verma.
Officials said the corridor will address multiple traffic bottlenecks, and the department has been directed to complete preliminary work and start construction at the earliest.
