Nvidia is reportedly in talks to invest up to $3 billion in SB Energy, a SoftBank-backed company developing a massive data centre campus in Ohio for OpenAI. The potential investment reflects Nvidia’s growing role beyond supplying AI chips, as it increasingly supports the infrastructure needed to power the next generation of artificial intelligence.
Investment Linked to Large-Scale AI Infrastructure
The proposed investment is part of broader discussions involving Nvidia, OpenAI and SB Energy around financing the Ohio project. The planned campus could eventually reach 10 gigawatts of capacity, highlighting the enormous power and computing requirements of advanced AI workloads. Reports indicate that Nvidia may also participate in a wider financing arrangement involving around $100 billion in credit support for the project.
The reported $3 billion investment could be structured in stages, with a portion potentially committed when the agreement is signed and the remainder linked to SB Energy’s planned IPO. However, the discussions remain preliminary, and no final investment agreement has been announced.
The move underscores a broader shift in the AI industry: companies are investing not only in powerful GPUs and AI models, but also in the data centres, electricity and financing infrastructure required to operate them at massive scale. Nvidia’s potential backing of SB Energy could further strengthen its position across the expanding AI infrastructure ecosystem.
