To recover pending electricity dues, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) has intensified action against defaulters across the Nagpur circle, disconnecting over 21,000 power connections within just over two weeks of launching a special drive.

The recovery campaign, which began on March 1, picked up pace with strict measures against consumers who failed to clear their bills despite repeated notices. By March 16, electricity supply to 21,308 defaulters had been cut, reflecting the utility’s firm approach toward non-payment.

The Nagpur circle, which includes Nagpur and Wardha districts, has around 19.46 lakh low-tension (LT) consumers. Officials stated that the disconnections mainly targeted habitual defaulters who did not respond to multiple reminders.

To speed up the process, senior officials have taken direct charge of on-ground operations, conducting inspections and directing teams to fast-track recovery, especially from commercial and industrial users.

The crackdown has started showing results. Officials reported that 13,644 consumers cleared their pending dues after receiving disconnection notices, following which their electricity supply was restored.

Authorities have urged consumers to treat the drive seriously, warning that disconnection not only causes inconvenience but also increases financial burden. Once supply is cut, consumers must pay the outstanding bill along with late fees, interest, and reconnection charges, significantly raising the total amount payable.

With summer approaching, officials cautioned that power cuts could lead to discomfort as well as economic losses. They also noted that with the financial year-end nearing and consecutive bank holidays ahead, last-minute payments may face delays due to heavy rush or technical issues.

Consumers have been advised to clear their dues in advance through official digital platforms or authorised payment centres to avoid disconnection.
