India is on track to add a record 20GW of distributed renewable energy (DRE) capacity during the current fiscal year, marking a significant milestone in the country’s clean energy transition. The surge is being fueled by strong policy support, rising electricity demand, declining solar equipment costs, and increasing adoption of rooftop solar systems across residential, commercial, and industrial sectors.
The rapid expansion of distributed renewable energy is helping India reduce dependence on conventional power sources while improving energy access and grid resilience. Rooftop solar installations, captive renewable projects, and decentralized energy systems are witnessing strong momentum as businesses seek lower energy costs and households embrace cleaner electricity solutions.
Government initiatives such as the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, along with supportive state-level policies and easier financing options, have accelerated the deployment of distributed projects across the country. The commercial and industrial (C&I) segment continues to be a major contributor, driven by corporate sustainability goals and the need to reduce operational expenses.
Industry experts believe that achieving the 20GW milestone will strengthen India’s progress toward its long-term target of expanding renewable energy capacity while supporting energy security, reducing carbon emissions, and creating new employment opportunities across the clean energy value chain.
