New Delhi: The Public Works Department (PWD) will build around 400 toilet and rest stop facilities along state highways in the next 2–3 months. These will be set up across a 1 lakh kilometre road network.

To avoid using state funds, PWD will use Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support. Private companies will be involved in building, running, and maintaining the facilities. Self-help groups may also help with maintenance.

This decision follows a Bombay High Court order in April. The court was responding to a public interest case filed by an activist, who pointed out that the government had promised to build 400 toilets but failed to deliver. The activist also said proper toilets are needed for highway journeys that last 2–4 hours.

PWD has chosen important spots across all districts. Facilities will be spaced every 30–40 km. Each district will have 8–10 such rest stops on major roads.

The department is also working on a map-based plan to ensure good coverage and improve travel comfort.

Megha Sonawane, a regular biker who raised this issue, said that these stops are essential, especially for women. She added that basic services like restrooms are still missing on many highway stretches.

To cover maintenance costs, a small user fee may be charged. Some stops will also have small eateries. A few facilities, like the one near Ekvira Temple in Karla, are already in use. More sites are being finalised.

To help travellers find the toilets easily, PWD plans to create a mobile app. It may be linked with Google Maps or be a separate app.

Some commuters have raised concerns about poor upkeep of earlier facilities. Activists have suggested regular third-party checks to ensure good quality and proper maintenance.

An MSRDC official said that more toilets will also be added along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, including at existing toll plazas like Khalapur and Talegaon.
